The annual BNW graduate conference - short for Birmingham-Nottingham-Warwick - was set-up by students at the philosophy departments at Birmingham, Nottingham and Warwick to forge a closer link between philosophy graduate students working in the Midlands and foster the exchange of ideas across departments. Each year the conference is hosted at a different department. The inaugural conference was hosted by Birmingham, the second iteration by Nottingham, and the third was hosted by Warwick. Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the fourth version, led by Birmingham department, has been held online.
The conferences allow graduate students from each department to present some of their current work, and receive informed feedback from a dedicated respondent, who works at another department, but in a related area. The conferences allow participants - presenters, respondents and audience members alike - to engage in research-focused discussions, providing the foundations for outstanding and innovative research. Finally, the conferences provide an opportunity for graduate students to come together to share ongoing research, receive informed and constructive feedback from one another, and explore potential areas for collaboration together. As well as providing graduate students with opportunities for peer-to-peer research, there will be a keynote at each conference, in which a member of staff from the host institution will present some of her current work. This will give participants the chance to engage with the cutting-edge research carried out at the host department. |
